Do You Hear That?

Last week we talked about how we have access to God at all times through prayer! We know that He hears and answers our prayers, and some of us have even seen that happen! So if we know that He wants a relationship with us and that we can talk to Him whenever we want, the question then arises of, “How does God talk to me?”

When it comes to how God talks to us there are very distinct ways that He speaks. The first one may seem obvious, but we very often either forget it or don’t think of it as God speaking to us. It’s the Bible! The entire thing is the living, breathing, word of God! The words themselves may have been written on paper by man, but all of the Bible is inspired and Paul even says that it’s been breathed by God Himself! The Bibles that we all have, whether physical or on our phones, are the literal words of God and from God to us! Remember that when you feel disconnected from Him! You may be talking to Him, but have you given yourself an opportunity to see if He has already told you! Go see what God has said!

The second way that God talks to us is through who Jesus calls our Helper, the Holy Spirit! Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit will help teach us all the things He has taught us and will even help remind us of what those teachings are! You know those little moments where you feel like there’s a small voice or a gut feeling that is prompting you? That’s the Holy Spirit! Ever had a moment where you were speaking about Jesus to someone and it almost felt like the words weren’t coming from you? That’s the Holy Spirit! When we feel lost and don’t know what to do and we get that sense of comfort, guess what that is? The Holy Spirit! When we accepted Christ as our savior, we also accepted the Holy Spirit to come and help guide us, speak to us, and comfort us!

So remember, not only do you always have access to God through prayer but He always has a way to talk to us! When we feel like we are “disconnected” from God, that’s typically not true. We just aren’t allowing God to speak back to us! He won’t always yell at us with a big, booming voice or through a burning bush, but He is always speaking! We just have to listen!

Read the following verses and write below what you think they say about how God speaks to us. Then answer this question: What ways do you find it easy to listen to God? In what ways do you find it difficult?

– Hebrews 4:12

– 2 Timothy 3:16-17

– John 14:26

Weekly Challenge:

At some point this week take 15 minutes of quiet time to spend with God! Go to a place where you feel safe and at peace and won’t have any distractions (even leave your phone in another room)! Pray and ask God to speak to you, to reveal to you what it is that He wants. Then write that down, anything that you feel like God is saying! The good, the bad, and the in between! After you’re done take that piece of paper and fold it up, put it in an envelope, and don’t share that with anyone!

  1. These verses say that the Bible is living and breathing. It is alive and it is inspired by God as well. Not only does God give us a book on how to live life and get through trials, but he also gives us the Holy Spirit to help us better understand the things of his word. The Holy Spirit not only guides our life and decisions, but it also helps us better understand and break apart the Bible for a better understanding. For me, I find it easier to listen to God in how he tells me to carry myself and how to find my worth, in him. However, I find it harder to listen to God when it comes to the aspect of trusting him completely. I struggle with control and wanting to know how something will turn out, that I worry and get anxious over little things. It’s hard for me to listen to God when he says he’s got it, or something like that.

    Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart

This tells us that the word of God is not just a book but it is alive and works in many ways! It tears on our hears and thoughts

    2 Timothy 3:16-17

All scripture is God- breathed and is useful for teachings, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

This tells us that when you read the Bible you aren’t just reading it but you are growing in Christ. It teaches us what it is like to be a servant of God and the qualities of a servant of God.

    John 14:26

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you

This tells us that the Holt Spirit will help us through hard times when we don’t know what to do! It will remind us of God at all times and will give us wisdom through times of uncertainty! It will speak through us!

Easy- I find it easy to listen to listen to Gos when there is nobody else around and it’s just Him and I. I find it really easy o listen to him when I have Christian music on as well. I think most of the time it’s easy to listen to Him when I already know what I want and he wants the same thing, so we have the same idea!

Hard- I find it hard to listen when I want things my own way and he wants things his way, (which is the right way)! I find it hard to listen when there is a lot in my life that has been going wrong and the enemy keeps attacking me. I find it hard when I can’t feel his presence because I’ve got so caught up in me me me and what I want to do that I don’t listen to Him.

2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬: God can give us different ways to speak to him. For example, he gives us an entire book to look off of. It gives us all the information that we need to know about him and how he is going to help us. Also he can do many things for us like in the verse, he can teach, rebuke, and train us for him.

John‬ ‭14‬:‭26‬: God will do everything for us to be with him. So he is going to teach us everything that he knows through the Bible. It has everything we need to know and what he is going to teach us.

Hebrews 4:12: This verse is saying that God is always ready to listen to what you have to say. He is never taking a break and never listening. He is always active and alive. God is always going to find out what is in you mind and always fix it. If you are trying to hide it and it is something that is hurting you deep inside, he is always going to find it

Easy: There are these specific times where it is very easy to talk to God. When the problem is very difficult to maintain on your own and you don’t know what to do, it can be very easy to get an answer.

Hard: Then there are the hard times. For me, when my situation doesn’t seem that bad, I feel like he is not listening and doesn’t want to help me. It can be the most minor problem like with homework or how to do something. I feel like he doesn’t care but then I pray to him. After a while, I realized that he did care when I found an answer.
