Selfless Worship

I don’t know about you guys, but Winter Jam was an absolute blast last night! It’s probably going to sound cheesy, but genuinely one of my favorite things about it is seeing and hearing everyone worship! It really is amazing to see and hear that many people worship God all at once! This does beg the question though, why doesn’t it feel the same way on Sundays?

I’m not just talking about the number of people either. It’s about a lot more than just the number of people around when we worship. Why is it that a concert like that can “feel” almost more spiritual than the opportunity we get every week on Sundays? If we really want the answer to that question, we have to be willing to first look inside of ourselves. We have to break this down and think and discuss what worship truly is, and what that means for us.

Now, I could spend the next several paragraphs talking about King David dancing and singing through the city streets almost naked, or even the verse that talks about how the rocks themselves would cry out to God if we didn’t. Instead, we’re going to take a look at ourselves and who we are and a little bit of who God is.

Worship can show itself in a number of ways, and the easy way out is to say that worshipping God is about more than just singing songs. Which is inherently true, but we severely miss the true point of worshipping God. I watched each one of us (myself included) sing and dance and worship harder last night at Winter Jam than I think any of us have before on a Sunday. Now there is something to say about the style of music, and how a band like Skillet or a performer like KB have a different style that includes something different. But why don’t we have that same energy on a Sunday? Or even through the week when we hear worship music?

In that moment where we cut loose and just sing and dance, we don’t care about what is happening around us. We’re purely focused on the music, the lyrics, and just having fun. There’s nothing wrong with that! If we’re willing to do that for people on a stage, we should be even more willing to sing and dance and move a little for the God of the universe who created us! It’s not even about us and how we feel. It’s about God, who He is, and what Jesus has done for us!

Paul wrote in Romans ,”Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.” He tells us that in order to truly worship God, we have to realize that what we do with and to our bodies should be for God! That includes singing, dancing, and everything else we do! What we decide to do should be a sacrifice for God! And not a sad sacrifice where we have to cut something off and offer it up to Him, but rather a joyful one where we realize that we wouldn’t be here if God hadn’t decided to put us on this earth!

The chorus in the song Gratitude by Brandon lake says this:

So I throw up my hands

And praise You again and again

‘Cause all that I have is a hallelujah

Hallelujah

And I know it’s not much

But I’ve nothing else fit for a King

Except for a heart singing hallelujah

Hallelujah

For me, this has always perfectly encompassed how I feel towards God at times. There is absolutely no way that I could ever do enough or pay enough for the literal King of the Universe. There’s nothing I can do to show how much I appreciate what Christ does for me every single day! The very least I can do is follow Him and worship Him. Worship Him with everything I do, with all that I am, and with my hands lifted high.

Questions:

  1. Read Romans 12:1-2. What do you think Paul means by this?
  2. Other than through music and song, how can we worship God?
  3. How does worshipping God also include following Him and His commands?

Weekly Challenge:

  1. During worship on Sunday, truly worship! (This may look different for everyone, and I know it’s not KB, but what does God deserve from you?)
  2. Find 3 songs this week that really make you feel like worshipping and dancing and praising God!
