Normal

Every day, we are bombarded with messages telling us what’s “normal” and “acceptable.” Society often praises being self focused, redefines what’s right and wrong, and encourages just “giving in” for the sake of progress. God calls His people to be and do something radically different.

In Exodus 23:2, God tells His people not to “follow a crowd to do evil.” This isn’t just about avoiding bad behavior, it’s about rejecting the subtle pull and temptation to adopt the world’s values when they don’t align with God’s truth.

The pressure to blend in is real, but The Bible reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). We were never meant to fit perfectly into a broken world. Holiness, and being set apart, is not optional for followers and believers of Jesus. It’s actually the natural result of walking closely with Him.

Choosing God’s way over the world’s way will usually cost us something: popularity, comfort, and maybe even relationships. But Galatians 1:10 asks us pretty plainly: are we living to please people, or to please God?

Culture will always change and shift, changing what’s right and wrong to suit their desires. And then Isaiah 5:20 warns us: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” We must anchor ourselves to the unchanging truth of God and His word, not the shifting tides of societal norms.

Standing apart isn’t always easy, but it is necessary. The good news is, you are never standing alone.

Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life are you tempted to conform to the world’s way of thinking or living?
  2. Are you more concerned with seeking the approval of people or the approval of God?
  3. What does “being set apart” look like in your daily choices (work, school, online, friendships)?

Weekly Challenge:

Choose one area where you are tempted to blend in and take a stand for Christ instead.

This could be a conversation, a decision you make, or even something you choose to not do, just make it intentional and something different from things you’re already doing!
